Describes the aluminum alloy surface treatment of chlorinated rubber varnish adhesion of the investigation. The aluminum alloy was compared with the emery paper only, and chromate conversion coating was used. The adhesion strength between the surface and the chlorinated rubber varnish and the change of their wet adhesion after immersing in brine were compared. Although the surface of the chromate conversion coating is not as rough as the surface polished with the corundum, it exhibits excellent adhesion to the organic coating. This shows that mechanical interlocking is not a major factor affecting adhesion. Moreover, the presence of a chromate conversion coating tends to increase the wet adhesion of the paint. Microscopic analysis of the paint film and the aluminum substrate showed that the adhesion failure occurred between the paint film and the chromate conversion coating
