台湾大鬼湖之黑色沉积物岩芯中出现特殊的白层,其性质与黑色沉积物差异很大:白层有较低的孔隙率、有机质含量、碳/氮比,与较高的碳/硫比和氮/硫比,有机质较偏向水中浮游生物,可能是较干冷的气候下沉积的;而黑层之有机质主要来自陆生植物,可能代表较湿暖的气候.主要的白层出现年代,如0aAD,500aAD,700aAD,900aAD,1350aAD和1500aAD等,大多可以和中国或秘鲁冰芯所记录之干冷期及高尘暴期相对应,似乎表现大尺度的气候变动。
