Some fossils of vertebrates have long been used as “keels” and become treasures in medicine. The so-called “keel” is neither a skeleton of one of the three spirits (dragons, phoenixes, and kylins) in our legends, nor a dinosaur or other perishable reptile that was flourishing in the paleo-biological, geopolitical, and Mesozoic era. The relics are the skeletons of mammals in the Tertiary period of the earth history, especially in the later period of the Tertiary Period (the Pliocene in the history of the earth). The most common are fossils of dead elephants, rhinos, three-toed horses, deer, and giraffes. Because the most special animal that represents these animals is a three-toed horse, it is also called a three-toed horse fauna. The relics of these faunas are widely distributed in Shanxi, Henan, Shaanxi, and Gansu provinces, and are generally found in red clay.
