Vasoactive intestinal polypeptide (VIP) is a 28 peptide extracted from gut in 1970, which is very active and can relax smooth muscle, dilate blood vessels and stimulate glandular secretion. After radioimmunoassay, VIP was found to be highly concentrated in the central nervous system and in most peripheral tissues. Immunocytochemistry showed that VIP was concentrated in the nerve tissue that covered the whole body.
