A novel approach to vehicle collision avoidance based on infrared detectors and light-emitting diode (LED) technology may constitute a low-cost alarm system that alerts an operator to the presence of an object’s warning signal in the rearview mirror blind spot. Such systems are becoming more and more useful because, according to the U.S. Department of Transportation’s estimates, 13-15% of vehicle collisions are caused by inability of the driver to see the objects in the blind spot when changing directions. It is difficult to find a cost-effective and safe means of monitoring such accidents. Microwaves or radar systems can be used to monitor such blind spots, but these technologies lack the flexibility to integrate with other systems, are not reliable, and they can be prohibitively priced as a commodity.
