Examination of the well-preserved Gamblin flint flakes revealed the use of Huroniospora as a novel ecological indicator of key evaluation, with morphological variations ranging from spherical to ellipsoidal. One-third of the specimens examined were either simple circular holes or slope of the vessel wall. Wall construction and surface structure appear to vary with the integrity of the preservation. These and other features lead to the conclusion that Huroniospora represents spores or tunicate rather than asexual cells. The appearance of Huroniospora in the Schreiber Beach composite belt does not constitute direct evidence of the nature of the original photosynthesis of interbedded communities.
