在“三九”的寒夜中突然从广播中听到愈之同志的噩耗,悲恸难以自已。愈之同志从三十年代初到全国解放期间,在国民党统治区中,他是新闻出版文化界高举民主、团结、抗战、进步大纛的巨人,马克思主义的号手。他的死,像一颗巨星的殒落。记述愈之同志的一生,是一本大书的任务。我比他小十五岁,是他的一个小学生,在一九三七年抗战开始后,我才第一次在上海他领导下的救国会国际宣传委员会工作。翌年夏,在保卫大武汉中,他任郭沫若主持的政治部第三厅文化工作处处长,我协助创立中华全国青年记者学会,同年冬在长沙创立国际新闻社(简称国新社)。此后,在一九四一年一月皖南事变后,重庆白色恐怖中,在党的南方局安排下,我由渝经港赴新加坡,在愈之任主笔的《南洋商报》做编辑,在近一年中,日夜追随,朝夕相处,感受极深。这里是应新加坡《南洋星洲联合版》的要求而于一月中旬写的一篇回忆短文,刚要寄出,《群言》杂志要我写记念愈之的文章,时间匆促,来不及另写了。谨以此文,悼念愈之同志。
