BusinessWeek on the 20 November released the 50 most generous philanthropists this year, with Bill Gates, the founder and chairman of Microsoft, and his wife, Merrill Lynch, top of the list. Between 1999 and 2003, they had Donations and plans to donate a total of up to 23 billion US dollars in charity. Not only are they willing to sacrifice money, they are trying their best to promote a responsible, transparent and effective way of making donations. The Gates and his family's property currently have a total of 46 billion U.S. dollars, equivalent to Hungary's total gross domestic product. Their contributions amount to half of their property. Just these two days, Gates donated 10 million U.S. dollars to UNICEF and Carter Center respectively to help sick children and the blind.
