“二战”时惨遭日军蹂躏的经历对战后澳大利亚对日媾和产生了重大影响,澳大利亚的态度经历了由强硬到妥协的变化。这种变化是符合澳大利亚自身利益需要的。在“黄祸论”思想、“二战”的惨痛经验、经济竞争力低下以及自主外交的影响下,澳大利亚坚决主张对日强硬;但是随着新中国的成立和朝鲜战争的爆发,对日本侵略的恐惧被共产主义威胁替代,战时澳美的合作及战后英国的衰弱,使得澳大利亚寻求美国的保护,双方经过多次会谈后签订了军事同盟协定,澳大利亚最终在自身安全得到美国保障的前提下与日本签订了和平条约。
