Heavier diabetes can cause kidney problems, blindness or nerve damage. Medical researchers have found a way to screen for those patients who may have these complications. Doctors call these complications “microvascular” because they are caused by changes in the smallest blood vessels in the body. Not all diabetic patients develop these complications, but researchers estimate that about one-quarter of all diabetic patients will develop complications within 10 to 20 years.
