一明朝自成祖以后,即开始派太监参与“出使、专征、监军、分镇”等活动,并在一些部门负责监督。宣宗时又“设内书堂”,使“中人多通书晓文义”,于是明代“宦寺之盛,自宣宗始”。明英宗正统、天顺时,王振、曹吉祥都是专横跋扈、显赫一时的大太监。尤其是曹吉祥任司礼太监时,还总督京师三大营,掌握了兵权,与当时大将石亨互为表里,“时并称曹石”。
