蔡仪先生在 20世纪前期自觉地运用唯物主义哲学理论系统地解释人类审美现象,初步建立起具有现代学术形态且个性卓然的美学体系,《新艺术论》和《新美学》是其代表性理论成果。其哲学美学的研究方法、对文艺认识功能、意识形态功能的强调,都对 20世纪后期中国美学有奠基的作用。其对美学遗产的虚无主义态度及以西方美学为美学的学术偏颇同样对新中国美学有深刻、普遍的影响。同时,其突出的二元简单对立和西化倾向也成为 20世纪中国美学的典型学术局限。
