It seems a little weird, almost “absurd,” but there is a deep connotation. It tells people that the key to today’s reform is “changing thinking.” To become prosperous, we must first replace the thinking of small-scale peasants with the idea of an open new peasant; we should replace the feudal remnants of the husband’s rights and the old ethics of marriage with socialist marriages. Gray-gray and Gui-lan, Wo Wo and autumn velvet rupture symbolize this transformation. The outcome of “wife changing” is that the combination of Wo He and Guilan is the impact on backward thinking of conservative small farmers and a challenge to the old moral ethics. This is where the moral force of “changing wife” is. It is the old and new ideas, two kinds of forces fighting, is the cry of the times.
