Timken Company recently conducted an ultrasonic test on 36 batches of continuous cast billet to study the effect of electromagnetic stirring on the macroscopic distribution of inclusions. Electromagnetic stirring is mainly to homogenize the billet solidification. As most of the literature describes, the usual benefits of electromagnetic stirring are: 1) increasing equiaxed grain numbers to improve casting structure; 2) reducing macro segregation, especially segregation at the center; 3) improving billet surface quality; and 4) Contraction loose. In the current study, these benefits are more or less confirmed. Although the literature often mentions the influence of electromagnetic stirring on the distribution of inclusions and the function of removing inclusions, it is seldom confirmed. In addition, the previous research work in this area is usually traditional
