In the United States, there are quite a few women who make documentary films that I encountered. But the first reason I want to write about Julie and Ellen is mainly because each film they make is related to China. I met them at Harvard University in October 1997. During that time I was in the studio of the Boston documentary Fred Wiseman and watched him edit a piece of his new film about a small town. Wiseman’s residence is near Harvard University. Beijing-based friend Yin Hui is studying news at Harvard. She said she was listening to a documentary lesson and I went to hear her once. During that class, I got to know Zhu Lai, twenty-seven,
