一、古典文学英译简史古典文学的英译可以追溯到历史上的东学西渐。东学西渐是一个和西学东渐互相补充的东西方文化交流过程。东学西渐有1000多年的历史,对世界文化的发展有十分深远的影响。对中国乃至世界文化思想影响最深的先秦古籍首推《四书》《五经》《战国策》等。然而,我国先秦文献虽然成书很早,这些古籍的英译和对外传播却罕有人问津,能够称得上系统英译并西传的最早时期是19世纪。提到中国典籍英译应该首推英国汉学家詹姆斯·理雅各(James Legge,1815—1897),他是最早且最具权威的译者之一,其译作颇丰,对于古典著作的翻译多有涉足,为我们积累了宝贵的财富。
