吕思勉被香港史家严耕望推崇为“前辈史学四大家”之一~①,足见其在二十世纪中国史坛的重要地位。吕氏主要以研究古史名世,同时亦重视近代史,留下颇为丰富的近代史著述。1997年华东师范大学出版社出版的《吕著中国近代史》包括:《中国近代史讲义》、《中国近世史前编》,为其早年在上海光华大学讲授中国近代史的两份讲义;《中国近百年史概说》,为1943年在辅华中学讲 Lu Si Mian was praised by Hong Kong historian Yan Tung as “one of the Four Generations of Historians ” ①, which shows its important position in the 20th century Chinese history.
