Audiences face the media initiative has been recognized academics. How the audience actively interprets the content of the media and how the content of the interpretation differs from the original content conveyed by the media becomes a question worthy of study. From the perspective of hermeneutics, this article explores the above issues with the viewing experiences of the Chinese audience as examples. Through the method of snowballing, the author conducted semi-open interviews with 20 Chinese audiences who claimed to be “American fans”. The study found that the interpretations of the American TV dramas by the interviewed American fans are closely linked with their respective horizon formed in China’s specific cultural and social environment. The article also finds that the encounter between the audience of the American fans and that of the U.S. drama is a critical dialogue. Chinese audiences will spontaneously accept critically the sights of the American TV drama if they encounter some completely incompatible values with traditional Chinese culture (such as addressing elders in their names), that is, understanding these values conveyed by the American drama Refuse to include them in their original vision. All in all, the American drama fans in the United States are not just an entertainment medium or an English learning tool, but also a medium by which they reflect, examine, correct and stick to their original culture and tradition, that is, their original vision.
