This article discusses the objectives, progress, and future plans for an adiabatic engine research program for the U.S. Army’s tank and motor vehicle headquarters and the company. The concept of an adiabatic engine is that the combustion chamber of a diesel engine is insulated from the outside with a refractory material, forming a state close to the adiabatic state. From this concept, the heat lost by the cooling and exhaust systems is converted to useful work by the turbine under normal conditions, which is why the adiabatic engine can increase power and improve efficiency. Engine tests have repeatedly proven that adiabatic engines are the most fuel-efficient engines in the world. The typical 450HP, multi-cylinder engine has a minimum fuel consumption of 0.285 lbs / hh (48% thermal efficiency). An early adiabatic engine (mounted on a five-ton military vehicle) has successfully completed its initial vehicle qualification. The design and good offices work of the 600-750HP adiabatic engine with a long development cycle at the next stage is under way and the work on low-friction adiabatic engine program is continuing.
