84-year-old Robert Payne Warren quietly died in sleep. He was the first Laureate poet officially awarded by the United States in 1986. He had humorously declared that he preferred not to accept the title if it was for writing poetry for ceremonial purposes. “My God, no,” he said at the time, “I do not expect people to hear me poet’s praise for Ronald Reagan.” For nearly half a century, Warren has won almost every literary prize . Most notably, he was the only double-prize winner of a Pulitzer novels (“The King of Men,” won the 1947 Award) and Poetry (Winners of both 1958 and 1979). What the people called “red” Kentucky, and also an influential critic and teacher, co-wrote “Comprehension of Poetry” and “Understanding of Fiction” with Collins Brooks Adored by generations of students.
