蜀葵与名花木芙蓉,同属于锦葵科“家族”,因最早在四川发现,四川简称蜀,故得名“蜀葵”。又因它在端午时节开始放花,所以又得名端午花、端午锦。又因它的叶片大,且又倾向太阳,遮住了根部,所以又称为卫足葵。《西墅杂记》载,倭人前来进贡,见栏前蜀葵花不识,题诗留问。诗云:“花如木槿花相似,叶比芙蓉叶一般,五尺栏杆遮不尽,尚留一半与人看。”诗中将“五尺”作“一半”,全体该是一丈了,蜀葵别称“一丈红”,想即本此。蜀葵别名不少,还有叫熟
