This article outlines and discusses the development of long-lived, high-current-density cathodes that Hughes Electronics has taken on. At current densities up to 1 A / cm 2 or even higher, cathodes are required to last as long as 7 to 10 years, which is driving the development of existing cathode technologies. Currently, the most reliable cathode for use with high-current density convergence guns is the barium-tungsten-storage cathode. However, it is well known that the performance of such cathodes decays with increasing working time, and the rate of decay depends very much on temperature. We can interpret the lifetime test data from Hughes Electronic Power by an aging model. The basis of this model is the cathodic surface loss controlled by Knudsen’s time. This article discusses this model and discusses some experiments based to some extent on the prepositions of this model.
