The culprit is pet woodchuck The U.S. health authorities recently confirmed that at least 19 patients in three central and western U.S. states have been infected with the monkeypox virus commonly known as “monkey ceilings” through exposure to animals. This is the first outbreak of this deadly disease in the western hemisphere. The U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention issued an emergency outbreak alert on June 7, 2003, reminding medical and public health officials across the country to pay close attention to the new infectious disease. According to the latest statistics, 17 people in Wisconsin have been suspected of being infected with the monkeypox virus and one patient was also found in Indiana and Illinois. Four of these patients are being hospitalized and no death report is available.
