英国的讽刺作家们十分鄙夷势利行为。他们似乎满脑子都是这样的想法,认为财富、显贵和优雅皆为空空洞洞、盛气凌人之物,都是洪水猛兽。莫非这些满口仁义道德之辈果真看破人类追名逐利之虚妄?这似乎不大可能,因为他们经常对浪漫爱情、慈善事业、冒险、神秘主义的虔诚、快乐的心情或无情的意志滥表钦佩——凡此种种激情与任何势利冲动完全一样,皆因幻想而生,以失望而告终。为何他们单单对势利小人的名利意识怒目相向?难道出身、金钱和时尚真的毫无价值?难道它们没有拿遥不可及的
British satirical writers are very profane snobbish. They seem to be full of minds thinking that the wealth, dignity and elegance are all empty holes, domineering things, all scourges. Could it be that these mouthful benevolent moralists really see through the falsification of human chase for fame and fortune? It seems unlikely that they often abuse their romance, charity, adventure, mystic piety, happy mood or heartless will - - All this passion, exactly the same as any snobbish impulse, is born of fantasy, ending in disappointment. Why are they simply angry about the fame and fortune of the snobby villain? Are born, money and fashion really worthless? Do not take them out of reach
