The “tax prosecutor” is a controversial piece of Peter Carey’s work, as the theme reflected in the work, the social reality and the tone of its performance, are quite offensive to Australians who love patriotic enthusiasm. This article argues that in this work, Carey’s disquieting writing style is the result of his rewriting of traditional Gothic novels in light of the reality of Australian society. The novel’s gothic novel writing style has not drawn much attention because it does not conform to the traditional “Gothic Australian” rhetorical routine. In writing strategy, it more and more British classical gothic fiction was diverted and rewritten. The result is a reproduction of traditional rhetorical routines such as gothic novels, “trapped in the leisure space,” “sexual perversions,” and “restitution of suppressed objects.” However, it is not limited to the performance of confinement and sexuality Metamorphosis brought horror and tension. On the extensive and profound revelation of the corruption in Sydney society, it gives new social significance to traditional Gothic novels.
