Objective To study the relationship between development and function of male gonads and selenium. Methods Male Wistar rats were fed with low-selenium diet, selenium-supplemented diet and conventional diet immediately after 14 weeks and 39 weeks respectively. The fluorescence intensity was calculated by using the fluorescence spectrophotometry of 2,3-diaminonaphthalene (DAN) and the chemiluminescence enzyme Immunoassay to measure blood and testicular selenium content and plasma testosterone levels and other indicators. Results After 14 weeks of rearing, selenium and testicular glutathione peroxidase (GPx) activity in blood serum and testis of rats in low selenium group were significantly lower than those in control group, and seminal vesicle weight, seminal vesicle index and plasma testosterone Were significantly lower than that of the control group, but the level of lipid peroxide (LPO) in testis was significantly higher than that in control group (P <0.05). Supplementation with a certain amount of selenium in low selenium feed can correct these changes to some extent. After 39 weeks of feeding, the selenium index in the selenium-depleted group was further reduced, with a significant difference from the control group (P <0.01), and even the testicular index dropped to a significantly lower level than that of the control group. Conclusions These results suggest that inadequate selenium has an adverse effect on gonadal development and secretion in male animals, and adequate selenium supplementation can be used as an adjunctive treatment for male infertility.
