For industrial and commercial buildings, sprinkler systems are one of the most commonly used fire protection systems. For the first time in the early 1900s, textile companies in England introduced sprinkler systems to protect mechanical equipment and textile products in early multi-storey buildings. The ceilings of these buildings are low and the textile products are stored in wooden crates throughout. Sprinkler systems are designed to spray half the amount of water on the ceiling while the other half is sprayed onto the floor. An important function of these early sprinkler systems is to wet the combustible ceiling and protect it from burning.
