Sinclair Lewis’ 1922 novel Babbitt was considered a master piece due to its vivid and satirical portrayal of a typical American business man. For many years, this novel has been studied from different perspectives by many critics. This paper makes a Marxist reading of Babbitt and concludes several typical characteristics of the American business class as represented by the central figure of this novel, George Babbitt.
