水库调洪演算,以往是将水量平衡方程用差分形式表示,然后与泄流设施的运动方程联立求解。常用的试算法、图解法或半图解法计算工作量很大,精度不高,不宜使用计算机。在引入“调洪函数”概念后,将水量平衡方程与泄流设施运动方程归纳成为一个一阶常微分方程,然后用常用的计算方法(如改进欧拉法、龙格—库塔法),根据边界条件,求出该方程初值问题的数值解。按照上述原理,可编制成相应的计算机程序,用计算机计算。
