The pre-Miocene tectonic movement in Japan was curved in Kyushu and central Japan. Because of the opening of the Sea of Japan in the Miocene, the metasomatism of the Jurassic lines, the Neo-Comptonian basin and the Late Cretaceous strike-slip onshore geologic formations all bend. Central Japan is strongly bent due to the collision of Japan with the Izu Ridge during the Pliocene-Quaternary period. This article presents a reconstruction of the Sea of Japan before its opening. Using a two-dimensional model of a wide range of flexurally-sliding folds, we explain the bending tectonics in central Japan and Kyushu and the fault movement in the late Tertiary.
